"A Taste of Honey" by Shelagh Delaney

A Taste of h superstary by Shelagh Delaney is everlastingly remembered as her best piece of writing. This was one of the British plays of the 1950s that helped act upon our perceptions of that age. Delaneys first, adolescent play was write in the late 1950s, when Britain was ease in black-and-white - or, at least, that is how it is remembered from films of the period, notably Tony Richardsons 1961 version, with Rita Tushingham, Dora Bryan and Murray Melvin. Its influence, strong teeming on the basis of Joan Littlewoods famous stage exertion in 1958, passed even more late into the popular consciousness pause thanks to Tony Richardsons classic block out adaptation in 1961. Richard Beechams congenial revival of this sad humbug of a feckless yield, difficult, languorous girl and the possibilities of love crossways racial and traditional grammatical gender divides recaptures the gritty, starchlike atmosphere of the pilot program and its Salford setting. Gemma Craven draws us in as the blowsy father, always looking for the contiguous drink, the next figure of male company, and force her love child laughingstock her. Kaye Wragg, however, is in any crusade attractive, too much the self-confident modern actress, to catch the ungainliness of Jo, the lonely girl who fall for a black sailor, with the involve pre-pill results.

(Richardson 1-2) Mark Springer handles this subjugation sensitively, and the play pullulates off in the second half when Ashley Artus appears as the queer (this is long sooner the days of being gay) dodge student who moves in to mother the pregnant Jo. The radicalism of the play, with its sympathy for black-white relations and homosexuals, points to the more liberal 1960s.
